Screams and an angle grinder working metalwill keep the kids away. As does waiting for them to get close to the door then firing fake blood at it from a super-soaker (especially if combined with the angle grinder thing).
This year I've got some carpet, a mannequin rolled up inside it, and some fake-blood-covered clothes.
