We had half a dozen flights in the preceding four weeks to get used to the airfield operationsBut, yes, I was a complete novice and very nervous. It took me until the Thursday on the week-long course to stop giggling nervously. I think four or five went solo during the intensive week, with about 30 flights under their belts - it took me a year and about a hundred flights, but I got there in the end.
Thermalling on my own at 10kts up under a big cloud in rough air is simultaneously the most terrifying and exhilarating thing I've ever done.
