A bucket or bin would be more awkward to clean,
and wouldn't offer the benefit of being able to lean on it while puking and shitting.

On the contrary.
I find sinks block far to easily especially when used regularly whereas a bucket or bin can be emptied down the toilet and if it's cheap enough thrown away if it gets too much trouble.

You have a point there, so long as you remember to keep a bucket or bin within reach in the bathroom.
Even so, the sink still has the advantage of being something solid to lean on as well as being nice and cool to rest your head against between bouts of vomiting.
