The extra melanin absorbs more UVA radiation.
Thus protecting other structures from damage. Dark skin is like natural sunblock.

However, it also blocks UVB radiation, so in areas with less sunlight, dark skin isn't so good at churning out Vitamin D.

When it comes down to the absorption of IR radiation (heat) the colour doesn't make much of a difference.
