I used to work in an office in southwark and had a seat by the window, every day i'd see a few cars with large white arrows on the roof, all sorts of cars, a few vans etc.
never saw them anywhere else, never figured out what they were for.

That's how Google makes sure there are direction markers in Google Maps. When you type a search request, Google dispatches a car to the right location so it's there when the satellite picture is taken. I'm told it only needs about 12 lines of Perl CGI.
