I witnessed a crime

I think it's legal, so long as they're there and agree. Certainly far more legal than stoning someone!
Do you mean "pelted with rocks till they scarpered" or "stoned" as in "to death"?
And why were you more worried about catching the crazy guy than about this criminal knife who was helping you chase him?
