This is a question Failed Projects

You start off with the best of intentions, but through raging incompetence, ineptitude or the plain fact that you're working in IT, things go terribly wrong and there's hell to pay. Tell us about the epic failures that have brought big ideas to their knees. Or just blame someone else.

In about 2003
I promised a mates dad a website for his business. I have a notepad file with about four lines of HTML on it on a zip disk* somewhere.

*does anyone else remember these?

IOMEGA ZIP Disks
The very best (and indeed only) way to save 100mb of important data, and to be able to carry it round, and use on any machine that had a zip drive. And then one day to plug the disk in and find it made a strange clicking noise and all that 100mb of valuable data...has...just...vanished...poof

Yes.
I have discs and discs worth of sounds for my Akai [letterandnumbers] sampler, rotting away in the back of a cupboard somewhere.

Still, both were good when I had nothing but an Atari ST to write tunes on.

yep
my mate pinched one for me from his work in about 2000.

and it proudly sat below the 3.5" floppy drive in my pc for years and did bugger all. in retrospect, what was the point again?

We still have a zip drive
connected to a computer here.

Which of course is singularly useless, because nobody else has any way of reading the disks once they're written, short of disconnecting the drive and plugging it in to a similarly crap PC.

I went for the other option at the time - the Syquest EZ135. Still have it somewhere, with piles of disks of audio samples on them.

Yep, I had one of them at work
Then we upgraded it to a "jazz" drive.

A prophetic name if ever there was one.
