Having had to resort to google previously to resolve this issue
I would say that this isn't obvious unless you already know about it. I think in this case it's Sony that are "doing it wrong" by not allowing both the AV Multi Out and the HDMI port to work in tandem.
P.S. For clarity and/or future reference the "red/yellow/white" adapter is a Composite video cable. /pedant
