You see, that's what I thought
because the glue could only be as strong as the wallpaper supporting it, but my missus flew a flid and insisted that it worked fine and so I relented. Kinda hate being proved right like this, though.

your lesson there is drill, rawlplugs and screws. Them "handy andy" threaded rawlplugs are pretty effective in shite plaster, I find.

Also, get rid of the wallpaper anyway. It always looks shite no matter how expensive or tasteful it is.

I'm getting around to that
I've only lived here for seven years and, because the house has been here for 102 years, I figure that removing layers of wallpaper is only going to reveal some other nightmare that I'd rather not know about.
