You can be as aware as you like on the bikebut if the car driver isn't expecting you to be coming up the inside fast, then you're still getting knocked off aren't you.
I will say that I know that many car drivers are totally unaware of their surroundings and they annoy me too, but at least if you get bumped in a car by another car, there is much less chance of death.
