my maths teacher would burst into tears of gratitude that his repeated mantra of "always show your working" had sunk in. Apparently for all of the maths GCSE questions there were four points available, and you could pick up one or two of them even if your final answer was wrong, if you had demonstrated your working-out correctly and the only problem was that you'd accidentally transposed two digits, or made an arithmetical error that was so simple you hadn't realised.
