It is pretty stupid.
We do have the odd 24hr supermarket but they are pretty few and far between.

Why is it stupid?
The shops are open straight from 7am monday to 9pm saturday.

Not every shop is a supermarket, lots are open on sundays.

There isn't any point to it
Plus, I quite like 24 hour shops. I'm not getting into an argument with you about it though.

It's not an argument, you're entitled to your opinion.
But you're thinking too much about the convenience of having 24/7 supermarkets. The reason it was introduced is so that there's a period of time where the only shops that are open are the smaller ones. This is so they don't go bust.
