You can do a 21 day intensive course in the US for about 2K (plus getting there & accomodation) which would probably work out about the same price overall.

A couple of hours a week, initially with an instructor, then after 15-20 hours you go solo, until you've notched up a minimum of 45 hours flying time, then you have a medical, practical & theory tests and you're sorted.
