I bought a portable AC unit year before last
totally not worth it in terms of practicality if your house is even slightly open plan (i.e. has stairs and / doors). Just sat in our garage most of the time.

if it has a heat pump it should work fine, most so called a/c units wont have this and are nothing more than fans with some exhust facility

oh it works
it's just so noisy and you need to confine the space it's cooling, so previously we've rigged up sheets over stairways etc, just daft.
