a tough question
but i think the best fish was not the biggest, but one that took time. i'd fished a lake for a year or so, had a couple of the known big fish, then late in the summer i was walking the lake and saw a big common carp in the ring of summerged fence posts at the end of the lake. it spooked quickly and hid back under the over hang of the bushes on the bank, tl;dr
