Do you need to drop down to a lower register? This is coming from someone who bought an 8 string Jackson Dinky on a whim, and doesn't know what to do with it

is to borrow one for a couple of months to see if I like the extra range and being able to play so many runs from one position instead of having to keep moving around the fretboard. This one's for sale for under £300 which means if I don't get on with it can flog it without too much worry.
The danger is, of course, that it all ends up as ... JAZZ

There's tonnes of stuff I'd like to just get out of my system

I see that the Subrays are all pretty cheap at the moment. I thought about getting the 4 string version for one of my kids. The Sire Marcus Miller basses are a lot of guitar for the money, too

I've already got an '89 4 string but I saw an Ibanez SE505 for £290. The MusicMans are 22 fret though and I really fancied something properly modern. The Ibanez is pretty much exactly what I've fancied. I may hate the thing but only one way to find out...
Edit - if it were me I'd get them a Sterling. Simple, solid, easy to play and robust out of the box but good for upgrades if they want to make it better in the future. The Sire bases are amazing but active so more fiddly and from what I've heard the hardware is not great, though worth upgrading.
