Oh I use non-physical media too, but I do not believe it has any monetary value, and I don't believe you truly own anything intangible. If I'm going to buy a film (or album or whatever) it's got to be a physical object.

And the council here are incredibly picky about what goes in the plastics binthey threaten to dump the entire cartload if there's even a hint of mixed materials or contamination anywhere, almost as if they're looking for a reason to not recycle any of it, of course there'll be at least one household somewhere on every round who hasn't rinsed out a tin properly

Never heard of MusicMagpie before. I've seen the charity shop outchucking first hand:Very little actually gets chucked away, at least in my experience. Clothes, shoes, bags, books, dvds, cds, records, bric-a-brac and toys all get 'ragged' (sold by the kilo to a company who ID and sell good stuff and recycle everything else).
The resellable books and media make their way to undercutting cunts like WorldOfBooks, for example. I cannot begin to describe how much I hate WorldOfBooks, but they are keeping books out of landfills.
Eventually your council will consist of saner people who understand that they live on a planet, and they will change their recycling ethos and employ better people.
