Watching it now, first time I've seen it for 30+ years.
Quite a revelation seeing it in HD with 5.1 sound, you forget how terrible the pan 'n' scan VHS/broadcast versions of films were.

Saying that, the massively improved picture quality
is not kind to some of the fx. Like the man clawing his rubber face off.

Yep.
It's got Spielberg's fingerprints all over it, but it's still Tobe Hooper's film. Good combination of talents, and great cast like you say.
