I did my own research
and found that the American Ribbed Toad is otherwise known as a 'tailed frog' - and the tail is in fact an "extension of the male cloaca."

So it's more likely ribbed for their pleasure, I guess the females' pleasure specifically, since they employ internal fertilisation and the females are presumably the ones selecting for bigger male sex organs.
