And they'd've given up if it wasn't for four scousers that gave them their look and two scousers that gifted them their first "hit" single "I Wanna Be Your Man"

Yep
Unreal is also royalty free for what I guess they consider to be emerging markets: Architecture, visualisation, simulation, and film.
Also of course free for educational purposes, so the next gen of game makers etc will all be using it.

Depends
"Unity does not charge on a per title basis and you do not pay royalties or pay revenue share, even for games and applications made with the free version."
5k is bugger all, when you think Office Pro plus is £350+ Autocad £1500+ a decent computer £2000+ Visual studio subs £2k / year
Perhaps for one man bands 5k is "something" but not for anybody with a business.

And I have battled with many a client over what's the correct purchase vs what's the cheapest purchase.... so I feel your pain.
I, personally, don't have an issue paying top whack (or recommending that others do - IF the tools do the job they need doing in the way they need it done.
A few years ago I had a colleague who was having a new house built, one of them pre-fab jobbies, held together with lots of nails. 15 laborers turned up with hammers from the contractor and took 3 weeks to erect the primary structure. When the supplier turned up to seal and fix it, he said it normally takes 4 guys, 2 nail guns and 4 days to put it up. (as to whether they used dewalt or b&q own brand nail guns, I suppose is another thing...)

Whats the 3D modeler of choice these days?
Thinking of learning up on one as it's been ages since I updated my knowledge.
Used to do a bit of Cinema 4D and do a lot of solidworks now but that's not suitable for gaming graphics.
Tried Blender but it's really unintuitive.

I havn't dabbled withit myself
Since 3D Studio (With software 387 hack) and POVray days :) I am a creative spaz.
I have clients using Rhino, Unity, Blender and even SketchUp (!) all sorts of other stuff too, though. I usually act as devils advocate in meetings making sense of it - sense which normally comes down to the users' training / experience and, often, more importantly interaction with 3rd parties.
It often comes down to limiting the costs of training, asset conversion and recruitment as much as capability. Mind you my clients are often not evcen doing interactive stuff, and no games makers...

I met people in IT strategies who would buy something incompatible with their current systems if it cost a little less. It was an e-shop frame - they went with the cheaper one. This meant his team met budget.
However, the cheaper version wasn't compatible with Access. All the data for ~7000 products in eight languages was already neatly stuffed into Access.
I was told to 'Look into this'.
We had two students working full time for three months just copy/pasting. I imagine they look back at that time in a stuffy room next to the xerox with a smile and perhaps murder in their dear little hearts.
All because of an internal contract
