A New Fad...for anyone who's still about
I've noticed a few people talking on t'interweb about some new thing called "Pinterest." Far from being comparisons of various objects with a famous playwright, it appears, as far as I can see, to be a great big online scrapbook where you just have a massive page of crap to tell people what you're interested in.

So my questions are several:
1. Hasn't this been done? Don't people already do this anyway on facebook and twitter and tumblr and lastfm and spotify and so forth? Why, therefore, is this gathering attention and headlines?

2. Do you believe the rumours that they have a privacy policy that allows their head programmer to install secret cameras in your home and watch you on the toilet?

3. Does the whole concept seem "fucking bent?"
(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:07, 66 replies, latest was 12 years ago)
I am wholly 'unpinterested' in such nonsense. Bent it is.

How utterly ptedious. I imagine anyone bothering with this shit is a pcunt. etc etc

Oh man good one!
Have you had a nice day today?
(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:25, Reply)
"Pintessentially shite," one might say
By the way, managed to get in a listen of Spirit's self-titled debut earlier today while I should have been working. Were you a fan?
(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:14, Reply)
Not entirely sold on them to be honest.
Old Randy was a protege of Mr Hendrix so I should have been v keen, you'd assume, but I bought 'the 12 Dreams of Dr Sardonicus'* as a teenager and only played it once or twice. Think I should try again?

*may not be the right name
(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:15, Reply)
Can't really speak for the later stuff
All I've heard is from the late '60s/ early '70s. Thought their first album was pretty good on the whole* - bits of it reminded me of some of the wonkier stoner/psychedelic stuff from that era you've linked to before. But with a bit of a jazzy element as well - though less forced-sounding than say, Skin Alley.

*and does feature some nice fuzz guitar
(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:18, Reply)
Hmmmm
Will look into this. Ta.
(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:20, Reply)
Another bit of trivia
Jimmy Page was a fan - apparently early Zeppelin gigs used to include a cover of, or snippets of, Fresh Garbage, off the aforementioned debut album.

(In't Wikipedia great, eh? Facts? You remember them? Remember we used to 'ave to look 'em oop in books? Books? 'member them?)
(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:26, Reply)
Loads of people rate them.
EDIT but then loads of people regard Robin Trower's 'Bridge of Sighs' as a Hendrix-influenced masterpiece and I think it's extremely mediocre, if not 'fucking shit'.
(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:27, Reply)
A Small Faces reference?
Yeah, just had to look that one up. Someone needs to point out to certain music critics that stealing a few licks from Voodoo Chile does not make a song a Hendrix-influenced masterpiece, it makes it a song with ideas stolen from Hendrix. A fairly uninspiring song at that.
(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:39, Reply)
He was in Procul Harum wasn't he?
Procul 'really fucking shit' Harum, as they're known in Chateau Boyce. 'A Salty Dog' is almost passable as an LP but really, PH were toss.

That's probably where I recognise the name from
Ties in with the point below about what you appreciate when you're younger - I can remember loving 'White Shade of Pale' when I was about 14 and found it among my mother's old 45s. Don't think I'd waste another three minutes of my life on it these days...
(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:49, Reply)
That is an an especially bent tune.

(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:51, Reply)
I just can't remember what I used to see in it.
(To redeem my mother's cool points, her collection also included plenty of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac and an original 45 of My Generation)
(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:56, Reply)
Also sampled on a Pink track

(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:31, Reply)
Lose 20 cool points.

You are now on -20 cool points. Sorry to be etc.
(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:33, Reply)
*hangs head in shame*
It is the only Spirit track I know (not for that reason). It always used to confuse me when the Pink song came on the radio.
(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:37, Reply)
Hey! Hang on....
I could easily afford to lose 20 cool points.
I'm surely still in positive figures?
(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:38, Reply)
You and Crow here have the highest music cool point scores on here (bar me, obv).

(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:40, Reply)
So you're all on -200
I bet you don't even know the name of the latest N-Dubz track

Ha! It's 'I'll Shank You Bruv'. So nerr.

Monty and I are discussing an old band by comparing them to other old bands that we've also heard.

(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:29, Reply)
'12 Dreams...' is from 1970.

(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:27, Reply)
So it is.
Well, the fact remains I haven't heard it, so I can't comment...
(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:28, Reply)
It was just a bit 'meh', if I recall - but maybe I wasn't old enough to appreciate it though.

(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:31, Reply)
Always a possibility
I didn't really 'get' Tommy when I first heard it. 12, 13 years on it's probably one of my favourite albums*.

*This in no way guarantees that persistently listening to Sardonicus will make it your new favourite LP...
(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:33, Reply)
To this day I'm not a massive fan of Tommy.
That said, I've always considered the medley on the Woodstock LP to be fucking superb.

I like their early singles best.
(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:36, Reply)
I seem to remember, about 10 years ago, a bunch of bands knocked out a Who tribute album
I nearly bought it. Then I realised it featured David "ooh-look-I've-changed-my-gay-costume-again" Bowie covering Pictures of Lily and promptly put the CD back on the shelf with what I hope was a suitable amount of British disdain.

One of my favourite singles, as well. As if the wonky-eyed cunt hadn't shat over British pop music quite enough already.
(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 18:00, Reply)
I have an old one
it's been around for a bit. Useful if you're a visual person, or do things that have easy visual aids (handiworks etc) since it deals more in pictures than text which makes it quite distinctive.

I like their philosophy but I don't find it useful
(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:13, Reply)
I have visual AIDS.

1. sometimes old ideas presented differently
draw more interest that they deserve

2. it's likely

3. no, depends how it's used, as usual. Most people will use it in a bent way, others will use it and make it good

It occurred to me recently that people who complain about how shit their fb experience is
Must have really shit friends.
(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:19, Reply)
this is a good point
hiding posts by dull friends and following the ones by lolsome friends is the key, I reckon
(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:27, Reply)
Facebook seems to have taught the world that some people have the capacity to be *unbelievably* dull.
(Mind you, we could have deduced that from some of the people on here...)

I've done a lot of work with Pinterest.
1) Yes, it is a scrap-book, no, it hasn't been done before.
2) You should see their API, with a bit of JSButification and jQuery you can hack the bookmarklette to show innocent pictures but post porn.
3) No, not at all, it's pushed through more social traffic than facebook and twitter combined for the fassion and food industries, with google falling way behind. Traffic means money.
(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 19:18, Reply)
I think you meant Google Plus rather than Google search

(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 19:27, Reply)
As a CIM qualified marketer, I will not be allowing Pinterest under my company's Social Media policy.

(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 19:29, Reply)
Nope.
Lots of sites are getting better results via social networks over Google Search these days.
(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 19:30, Reply)
Social Network management, depending on brand, has become equal for goal conversions as SEO.

(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 19:31, Reply)
SEO isn't a big deal in my sector.
The social network with the most use/ application in my industry is twitter.

Would you look on facebook for decreasing term assurance? Would you 'like' an update about the latest tranche of a structured investment product?

I think not.
(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 19:33, Reply)
Yes, you are correct, if you ignore when I say "depending on brand" and "socai taffic....fassion and food industries", and take what I said to mean everything on the internet, then I would be wrong.

(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 19:40, Reply)
So Google Plus drives more web traffic for certain fashion brands than search does?

(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 19:54, Reply)
No.
"Social Networks as a whole, for some brands, drive through more traffic and a higher percentage of goal conversions than global search. Pinterest, for some brands, has pushed through more traffic and higher percentage of goal conversions than Twitter and Facebook. Social Network Management, for some brands, is of equal importance as SEO, and in some cases, higher.".
(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 20:00, Reply)
If the G+ button, which is different from "Google Plus", didn't effect search results, then Google Plus would go the way of Google Buzz.

(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 20:01, Reply)
Alright benders?
