I might just send him photos of myself posing provocatively in the snow.
He might then hire me, someone massively unsuitable for the job because I'm just that kinda wakki.

I've just read through a discussion on the old Facebook,
Started by an artist frind of mine moaning that his neighbours only wanted to pay 100 quid for a portrait he's done of their son. (It is an incredibly good portrait).
the discussion seems to be full of other artists/writers/clothes makers/photographera harping on that "no one understands the value of our work" or "I pay so much to create, I need a reasonable return"
Now surely, the only value something has is what someone is willing to pay for it? I make music, I play gigs, I take the money offered by the venue, normally by negotiations around entrance fee or drink takings or whatever, but you take what's on offer. Refusing to do a painting for 100 quid, or do a photo shoot for 50quid seems a bit off to me. you work, if it's good and you market it well, you get popular, your work is more desirable, you start to charge more.

So if I had come into your pub and said I only wanted to pay a quid for a pint of bitter that would be all that pint was worth and you would've sold it to me?

if you consider art to be your job then I think you should charge price of materials, plus an hourly wage for your labour
then anything anyone wants to give you extra because it looks awesome to them can be considered as a bonus

well, considering it's skilled labour...around £15 would probably be right

take your record for example,
All the ones unsold are worth nothing, just because you ask for 15 quid doesn't mean they're worth 15 quid until someone buys one for that much.

yeah, I know that, but that is the only value you can place on something.
You either do art you enjoy and hope someone buys some, or you do art people want.

The negotiation on price should have occured before the work began because it's a "commission"
A portrait doesn't really have a free market value, as very few people would want to buy it. Unless it was a portrait of me.

If he was thrifty he'd find someone else to sell it too...this might make his client up the offer
now where could he possibly find a load of guys who would pay good money for portraits of little boys?

Surely they worked out the price before he started?
I refuse to do 'cheap' websites now, I have a minimum price. If someone isn't willing to pay that, they'll be more hassle than they're worth; they're normally extremely demanding. I do freebies too, but they have to be on my terms.
I've had like £250/ 3 days work jobs, that are 10 times the hassle of a £1000/ 5-day job.

Deffo, something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.
But a deal's a deal, if either party wasn't happy with the price to begin with, then they shouldn't have gone ahead. If the artist can't get the price he wants for his work, then he needs to look into doing it for a career - which is ovbously failing if he's behind a bar.

She's trying to flog her artwork and commissions, including portraits of childen and pets from photos.
They look absolutely fucking terrible.

Some of you may recall me bumming my mates band a while back. they were called shrine
they are now called black peaks, and despite being described as jeff buckley meets tool meets mastodon by Zane lowe still managed to get aired on fern cottons show in the day on radio 1. It's pretty heavy to be fair so I was quite surprised.

They let anybody fly planes these days.
I nearly had a heart attack the other day when a woman's voice announced she was the captain. It wasn't even a practical joke - they really let a woman fly a commercial airliner. What a world we live in.
