This is a question Prejudice

"Are you prejudiced?" asks StapMyVitals. Have you been a victim of prejudice? Are you a columnist for a popular daily newspaper? Don't bang on about how you never judge people on first impressions - no-one will believe you.

I'm prejudiced against atheists...
... because whenever a believer starts on about God they pitch in with their "mythical sky being" nonsense. Atheists are just as big a bunch of religious nutcases as the hardcore believers - but somehow they manage to be even more annoying.

Well, I like God...
...and I like Richard Dawkins. But which is best? There's only one way to find out...

by all sitting down and having a polite debate?
or.... FIGHT!!!!

Some atheists can be a bit fanatic
but as a rule, they tend not to shout about it as that tends to be the opposite of what atheism essentially is.

In the same way you don't get groups of people in pubs, or even TV pundits passionately discussing about how they don't follow a particular sport.

Christians who come back with "well atheism is a religion" are just stupid though.

Atheism is a belief system though
And I suppose agnosticism is too, but I can't prove it.

Atheism isn't really a belief system
Even Dawkins (yes, him again) rates himself as a 6.9 on the 7-point believer-atheist scale. No-one can say there definitely isn't a god, but most atheists are as agnostic about the Christian god as they are with Thor or Zeus. To say definitively that there is no god would be a belief system: to say "show me some proof that your god exists before I'll believe in him" is nothing like a belief system.

the best explanation of this I've heard is
"you believe in a Christian/Muslim/whatever god, right? well then, think of all the other gods from monotheistic and polytheistic religions you don't believe in. There must be thousands. Let's call it a thousand, for simplicities sake. You don't believe in 1000 gods. I just don't believe in 1001"

Just because some atheists have said that doesn't mean all are in need of proof.
I guess I fall in to the atheist category. There are no gods. Any of them. I don't need proof, I don't believe in any of it thinking it all thought up long ago to explain things we didn't understand, control aspects that people wanted controlled and to make people feel less responsible and grown up.

Though it pains me to say it
You can't rule out the possibility that one of them might be real. It's EXTREMELY unlikely, but Zeus could show up tomorrow and start throwing lightning around like it's candy floss. The chances of this happening are miniscule, microscopic, smaller than small and approaching zero at such an angle that you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference, but it's *just* possible that a god exists. To all extents and purposes we behave as if it's not, but there's still a lot we don't know about the universe and it's extremely arrogant to assume that we know everything.

"Atheism is a belief system though"

As is not believing in a six foot tall white rabbit named Harvey.

Fuckwit.

Why are you wearing that stupid man suit?

"Atheists are just as big a bunch of religious nutcases as the hardcore believers"
I suspect you may be wrong, but then again I might be prejudiced.
(, Tue 6 Apr 2010, 12:07, closed)
I'd tell the believers to shut the fuck up in the first place, then

(, Tue 6 Apr 2010, 12:08, closed)
There's no history of atheists burning people at the stake for questioning accepted beliefs though
Just saying.

This happens in lots of categories.
One I come up against occasionally is when some avid meat-eater finds out I'm veggie they become pushy-militants who want to shove their opinion on me. I don't get it. =/

I guess there are just, and always will be, people who love to shout their opinions at people and try and force everyone else to become exactly like them. Which is silly as then the world would be reeeeeeeally boring.

hitting a nerve are we?
is it because you have doubts about your faith?
