suspected rabies is treated pretty much as 'kill it now and give anybody who's been near/might have been bitten a rabies shot immediately'.

reason being: rabies in humans is not only fatal but also untreatable after a few days and AFAIK the only sure way to detect if an animal has it is by autopsy and that can take a while.
