I'm really only familiar with Space Oddity etc. which were played relentlessly on the Classic Rock station I listened to in the mid-80s, somewhere amid my 70s honky-tonk childhood, 80s headbanging teens, 90s college indie rock and post-millennial smorgasbord.

"Hunky Dory" might be a comfortable transitional stage before you move on to "Low"... but hey, why not just bite the bullet? It's not as if they're expensive.
(The CDs, I mean, not bullets. I dunno how much they cost)
*EDIT* Also, it looks like I'm living your musical life in reverse! From indie rock, to finding metal tolerable, and heading for a comfy honky-tonk middle-age...

They did an OK version of The Pixies' "Debaser", albeit not as good as the original. As if anything could be.

it won't exactly break the bank. Oh, and pick up a copy of "Low" while you're at it. I'm not his bank manager - I just reckon that's his best record.
