I'm still waiting for someone to do a film version set in Victorian London.The sense of being overwhelmed by a superior force is far more prevalent when the only thing you can throw at it is an ocean-bound ironclad.

Pendragon pictures attempted it..But the end result was complete pants :(
Cannon were pretty effective against the fighting machines in the book.
Unfortunately for humanity gas masks had not yet been invented.... So the black smoke did for them all.
Wells didn't know much about military tactics unfortunately (he was a pacifist after all). The best strategy would be large mines laid in the path of the fighting machines - kaboom!
