I once went to an evening with Shaun Hutson, the horror writerIt was meeting Garth Merenghi in person, but he was quite funny and one of the things he admitted to was when his friend Bruce Dickinson (of Iron Maiden fame) wrote a horror novel, he dashed off three quotes they could use on the cover without even reading the thing. The publishers chose one of the quotes, Hutson got paid.
