He has done a couple of things with patchwork people, unless I am missing something else (Coraline, The Doctors Wife, are what I know off with patchwork people.)

I am not a fan of that type of thing to be honest (Sci-Fi / Fantasy genre) , so its not something I would look for in the book sections, I may read his stuff one day.

I just figured that was the joke being a part of him was missing and then replaced.

He did a book with Terry Pratchett once, and most recently wrote that episode of Doctor Who when his Tardis was a woman

I generally find his stuff derivative and a little dull, tbh
