I did for a whilebut then he still showed up on "Friends' Activity" if any of my friends liked his posts, and reading SA sporadically like that is even more confusing than trying to follow it on /board

Your friends activity tells you what your friends like?Mine doesn't.... all mine does is show me if they've started a new thread, is mine broken? is it meant to do more than that or something?

There's a "share what you like" option in "update your profile"which defaults to off. So you only see what people like if they've set it to on.

go into your own profile settings and check to see if you are sharing what you like with your friends. If that is enabled, you can see what your friends like too
