[challenge entry] Video games and their effect on people
The violence debate aside there has been discussion in the popular press about whether games can produce notable effects on people, there have been people that suffer panic attacks after playing games, the common thinking on this theory is that games produce an over-production of adrenaline in some people.

EDIT : Done for new compy
Well I never suffered from things like this, except for one game that always used to frighten me at the very start for some reason, digging out an emulator and finding the .adf file online for it I wanted to rationalise it, see why it was happening. Coming to terms with this is hard, but I think that I am beginning to understand the reason why these waves of panic and dread used to sweep over me while playing it...

# Woooooooow James Pond!
Now that IS retro.

# James Pond II, Robocod
actually.

All 3 of the James Pond games am the best. And Stunt Car Racer, thats the best too.

In fact, games actually were much better in those days, imho :)

# Geoff Crammond
is remaking Stunt Car Racer. I'm REALLY hoping he keeps the same gameplay, but adds modern 3D and internet play.

# those were both fantastic.
And in reply to the post below about 90's graphics over gameplay, let your 16bit jealousies go, it's over... Stunt Car Racer had awful graphics, but genuinely induced vertigo! what a game!

# and you could even link your A500
with your (jealous) friends Atari ST, and play Stunt Car Racer against him, and the two rival computers didn't fight or try and blow each other up. It seems the computers could get along, just not the owners :)

# Retro?
bollocks, that's post-90s "graphics over gameplay" consumerism sequel-cash-in gaming, that is! Retro's back when games came on tapes... or better still, when you bought a magazine with listings in and had to program the game yourself!

Nice pic though.

# the only problem with your rant
is that Robocod is an immensely playable, great fun game. It just happens to have shiny bright graphics, too :)

(also, the C64 version of Robocod was available on cassette and 5.25" disk. Retro enough for you? :)

# Hehehe
I'm not singling Robocod out... my brother loved it, which considering he was 6 or 7 shows how easy it was to play.

didn't realise they still made C64 games when it came out!

# Yes.
Commercial games for the C64 were being released as late as 1995 or so. The C64 it self was in production from 1982 right up to the early 1990s, and I believe the only longer-running system is the Atari 2600 (clones of which are still made today).

According to the Guinness book of records, the C64 is the biggest selling model of computer, with over 22 million units world wide (and no the "PC" doesn't count, since its an architecture not a single computer model).

Anyway, Robocod followed the key to a good game as set out by Nolan Bushnell (the guy who started Atari, for those that don't know) himself, "Easy to play, hard to master".
