It's not that bad to use, but it's really too klunky to manage more than a few frames.

# clunky how? not the fine tuning for optimisation that you get in imageready, but otherwise it seems serviceable
 
(bear in mind I have been using MS Gif Animator, which is more like banging two rocks together)

I sometimes use the ImageMagick commandline tools to make gifs. Which, to follow your analogy, is like banging sand together.
