I didn't know that mods did that. Through the years I always got the impression that they intervened if there was something patently NSFW or similar. Having just spacked back through some of the modedit stuff, it seems a bit over the top. I remember being trolled to fuck by one or two flouncing n00bs back when some of this was still field-like and mods didn't touch it... and that was proper trolling. They wrote 'GAY' in Paint spraycan on a photo of me and everything.
