All of the human violence and death was simulated, and no matter how fucked up the other content, none of it was real.
Several octopus, though, were killed and eaten for real in the takes for that scene. It was unnecessary and I don't see that this sort of thing has any place in a feature film, any more than a few seconds footage showing a live cow being disembowelled in a slaughterhouse would.
