On an unrelated note, what (legal) free programme is recommended for image manipulation?

I tend to use Unfreez for making gifs.

It's pretty good for quick'n'dirties, but it's not good for complex gifs.

but make sure you use it in single-window mode. lucky chap, you get to avoid the million-window shitfest horror and only have to suffer the two-window shitfest horror
