I hear you, but over here price has stopped being a real issue, as long as you don't insist on the latest version.
My wife got me an iPhone3gs because I needed a new phone, and after the iPhone 4 came out our mobile company was offering the 3gs for something like $10 so she got me that. I know it's a cliche but I've ended up being completely won over by it.
