You can go back to Thatcher or as far back as you like for that matter.
IMHO, the left / right are largely broad, ill-defined constructs, handy for the powers that be, as a crude division that encourages the proles to fight amongst themselves.

b) most people are politically polarised, and so disagree with the sentiment.
I really hope it's (a), but sadly I suspect it's both.
Edit: Oh, I've worked it out - It's (c) - Hardly anybody gets the film reference because they're all too wet behind the ears. Yay, I'm happy again ;)
