It was banned by the time I left in 1988, and one pupil in my town had successfully sued a teacher for cuffing him around the ear in 1987.

life got a lot worse after the ban - we never knew what the punishment would be - a caning lasted 10 minutes (well, the sore arse did, the caning lasted seconds) but pessimi meant losing afternoons for weeks sometimes.
