It seems really over-the-top to me. Maybe it's more a marker of how underfunded news stations, and the BBC in particular, are these days rather than a marker of how trivialised things are now, but I still think the blanket coverage is ridiculous.

Given that the murder of a South African model by someone very few people care about isn't really very important in our lives, but the collapse of Europe's fourth-biggest economy *is* I'd expect some more coverage of that than another facile BBC "Berlusconi: Why do people vote for him after the scandals! We don't know but we've gathered a load of quotes we won't bother putting into context!" article.
