I believe it can be set up to give you the All Apps view too
which is pretty similar to a start menu, except it takes up the whole screen - but at least isn't an utter waste of time, and learnable.

Learnable, but slower, less ordered and thus not as user friendly.
It feels like a cluttered desktop, rather than a navigation.
I ended up just pinning loads of stuff to the task bar for the sake of quick access.
