The Atrocity Archive is an excellent start.It's about a computational demonologist who begins fieldwork for an offshoot of the SOE and has to deal with something unpleasant in Amsterdam.

actually I'll have a butchers at that. Big fan of short stories me. The Door in the Wall by HG Wells .. ace. Would you class Heart of Darkness as a novella though?
