Hitler was very charismatic, but the kernel of what would become the Nazi party was already in place. Whether they would have had the audacity to seize power without him is unlikely, though Himmler and Goebbels (amongst several others like Hess and Bormann) were as much the architects of the rise of the national socialists as Hitler himself.

When Hess was captured in Britain my Dad had to watch his cell while he was awaiting trial. Apparently he'd get pally with the guards and get them to give him cigarettes and stuff, then he'd rat them out so they'd get in trouble. He was also the last person to stand trial in the tower of London.

His work was seen as pedestrian. Instead of having another go or getting a job, he blamed the Jews. Bit of a leap in logic there but he had a habit of flying off the handle when things didn't go his way.
