They could transform into whatever toys sold best.The original toy line was called 'Diaclone' sold in Japan. Americans went to Japan, saw diaclone (also microchange) and then brought that to America as Transformers. An ad agency thought it would be a good idea to make a saturday morning kids show to help sell the toys. And that is essentially the story of the Transformers.

The UK comic stories were great.The US ones (before Simon Furman took over), less so. It was many years later that I actually saw the cartoon when it came out on DVD, and, erm, the UK comics were great.

I just recently sold my collection. I had every issue of the UK comic up to about 370 or so.I only had a couple of US issues. Bought them for a few quid from Forbidden Planet back in the mid nineties.
