# Transcript of Interview with Damien Hirst
clicky

He ends with: No, I gave you artist statements.... Hey, I'm not being funny, you know that, don't you? Yep, he's certainly anything but funny.

# he sounds like the kind of drunkard
who doesn't really know how people you haven't got drunk with actually work.
Hey look, I made an artist statement.

# well i'd buy him a pint

# but Spacefish, that's because
you're lovely.

# ...of whiskey.
Yes, I have liked what he does - actually I did a passionate defence of his work to my art teacher once (ah it's greeet being 17). I just think interviews are sometimes a silly way to learn about artists: if they're artists, surely the point is that they've found their best medium of expression already and it's not words..?

# I don't so much have anything against
modern art, though it doesn't appeal to me.

But I can't get over the pretentiousness of the people who talk such utter bollocks about it, and the stuck up fools who pay a small fortune to own it.

# I think you are right.
I think an artist who is a pretentious or downright nasty person can still make good art.
And Art collectors are indeed humungous tossers.

# Tom Paulin
that fella on the Late Review, makes me want to throw things at my tv screen

# fucking hell
he's SUCH an arsehole... I really really hate Tom Paulin.

# yup
i have a friend whose father is an artist, and he says that the shit that reviewers generate is totally not what the art is about. it's quite reassuring to think that actual artists think that it's bullshit, too.

oh, and half of the descriptions of pieces in art galleries are made up on the spot by curators. true.

# no. I just can't read it.
I got to the 'we're all weeping babies' and wanted to punch something. Mr P hates modern art of any description. I;ll fight anyone about anything really, because I;m tedious, so usually defend it. But things like that really don't help my cause...
(, Sat 8 Jun 2002, 9:57, archived)
# yes, I read that
and wanted to punch Mr Hirst.

# ok, and I'm getting my coat now, but
my defence of Idiot Emin winning the Turner Prize ages ago was that it's awarded to artists that get work on the public eye and promote discussion about art, among other things, and actually - for whatever reason she suceeded, she did bring art into the minds of the public and promote some form of debate. But then again, there is only so much self satisfied smugness you can take from the 'YBA' before you just want to kill them.

I now have my coat on and am calling a cab.
