its a US airforce expression.
Aircraft testing was generally done in remote farming areas. When the pilots (frequently) crashed, the US Air Force generally had to compensate the Farmewr for any damaged crops/buildings/livestock etc, meaning that most pilot deaths resulted in a farmer getting a large wedge of cash.

nearly there.
The brine shrimp they feed off in the wild are full of hematite, and other iron compounds. Chester zoo has a bunch of grey flamingoes, and they dont half look dull.

because of the plankton/shrimp/whatever
they eat. IF you feed them other stuff they turn a dull grey/brown colour.

Heard it was something to do with people waiting to leave the army
always wanted to buy a farm and settle down in peace, hence dead = buy the farm.
