true story:when we lived in leeds, mum once went off to that london for a weekend to see old college friends. my brother was quite upset that she was going away, so mum offered to buy him a present, 'anything you like (with reason)'. (my mum can talk in parentheses. it's quite a skill.) 'well,' said dan, petulantly, 'i was a blue elephant!!!', and stormed off.
monday morning, and dan goes down to breakfast to find a four-inch blue elephant that mum had bought from hamley's on the kitchen table.
he's still got it, twenty-odd years later.
