I think it was a kind of
sad, knowing use of irony.

The countless hours I spent wishing
his "Cutting a lady in half" trick would go tragically wrong.
On reflection, I think he'd probably have called the trick "Attempting to cut my beast of a wife into small bits, thus freeing me and my audience from munting hell".
But that'd never fit in the Radio Times listings.
