There's some 'interesting'
software around that can do that kinda thing.
Essentially, you can use one piece of information to find another and gradually build up a picture. Use the name to narrow it down to e-mail addresses, use software to attach those e-mail addresses to real addresses, look at the real addresses and figure out which is the one you want.

is this the person you said was going to columbia in NY?
nearly all US universities give each new student an e-mail address which usually can be found on the university web site directory. I used to live 5 blocks from UWMilwaukee and still find people using it, however the addresses can be out of date or may be a different person with the same name. And it does depend if they sign into it or not.
