# 192.com
try them
(, Thu 4 Sep 2003, 22:16, archived)
# phone book
or the police, accuse them of a crime
(, Thu 4 Sep 2003, 22:16, archived)
# cops wouldn't give you the info
no cause to... you've made a complaint, it'd be their job to continue from there, and in no way would that require or be likely to lead to them giving you any information about the suspect you've given them
(, Thu 4 Sep 2003, 22:18, archived)
# well anonymously accuse them of a crime
after you join the police and put youself on the case
(, Thu 4 Sep 2003, 22:20, archived)
# if you've already joined the force
then you'd be able to look them up anyhow without any accusation... just do a general background check
(, Thu 4 Sep 2003, 22:21, archived)
# oh yeah
thanks...
(, Thu 4 Sep 2003, 22:23, archived)
# thats ridiculous
*notes idea for future use*

# just a name?
or location too?

otherwise you're in for a fucking long trawl through directory enquiries... and many many "does (blah) live there? sorry, wrong number" calls, with attendant bills

and that's assuming they're in the phone book
(, Thu 4 Sep 2003, 22:17, archived)
# if he knows the town
it might be slightly easier
(, Thu 4 Sep 2003, 22:18, archived)
# either chicago or new york.
I had one phone number, but they wouldnt give any information out. Makes me wonder why they call it fucking "information services"....
(, Thu 4 Sep 2003, 22:18, archived)
# there's a way you can do a reverse look up.
if you have the phone number and no address or name.
(, Thu 4 Sep 2003, 22:19, archived)
# AT&T
used to have a reverse directory... you can google for one then try that and see where it leads you
(, Thu 4 Sep 2003, 22:19, archived)

C'MON TOM! It's been like THREE MONTHS!

It's getting unhealthy, dude.. and you know I say this in kindness.. honestly.

# thats not the fucking point though is it???
she has no fucking reason not to get in touch with me, she could be fucking dead or anything. do you really expect me to just fucking give up without knowing where the fuck she is and if shes alright or not?? what do you take me for?
(, Thu 4 Sep 2003, 22:34, archived)
# You're right Tom
I should not have spouted off like that.

Just worried bout you, Mate!

Hmm.. so, she's going to Columbia?

# 411.com

i'm assuming you're looking for a US address.
(, Thu 4 Sep 2003, 22:17, archived)
# yeah.
whats that then?
(, Thu 4 Sep 2003, 22:20, archived)
# 411
is the US equivalent of 192/118xxx
(, Thu 4 Sep 2003, 22:21, archived)
# i need something that doesnt cost money preferably.
cos i dont have any.

Ive tried searching online phone books, and theyre too vague. I tried rinign the local post office where she used to live, but they wouldnt give me her forwarding address. I tried ringing the university i think shes at, and they wouldnt give me any details whatsoever.
(, Thu 4 Sep 2003, 22:25, archived)
# try this maybe?
(, Thu 4 Sep 2003, 22:27, archived)
# sounds perfectly reasonable
you have no right to that information, they have no reason to give it out... no comfort I know, but that's just how it goes.

did you try calling the university and asking to be put through to her dorm? then see what you can get out of them as an alternative contact if she's not actually in a dorm?
(, Thu 4 Sep 2003, 22:28, archived)
# yes
good for them for not giving it out easily. gives me some comfort.
(, Thu 4 Sep 2003, 22:29, archived)
# damn right
the word for this is STALKING and it's fucking scary. If you don't want to talk to someone, they shouldn't try and make you.
(, Thu 4 Sep 2003, 22:39, archived)
# i dont know if shes there though.
i suppose thats one way of trying...
(, Thu 4 Sep 2003, 22:33, archived)
# it looks to have changed since i was there last.
it used to be pretty simple.
(, Thu 4 Sep 2003, 22:22, archived)
# 118 118?
Although apparently they're not the cheapest. Dial 118 then 3 random numbers, you'll get someone...

assuming that you're
a) in the uk
b) at least know what town they live in
(, Thu 4 Sep 2003, 22:18, archived)
# 118 800
that it all!
(, Thu 4 Sep 2003, 22:20, archived)

# There's some 'interesting'
software around that can do that kinda thing.

Essentially, you can use one piece of information to find another and gradually build up a picture. Use the name to narrow it down to e-mail addresses, use software to attach those e-mail addresses to real addresses, look at the real addresses and figure out which is the one you want.

# is this the person you said was going to columbia in NY?
nearly all US universities give each new student an e-mail address which usually can be found on the university web site directory. I used to live 5 blocks from UWMilwaukee and still find people using it, however the addresses can be out of date or may be a different person with the same name. And it does depend if they sign into it or not.
