you can live the dream of the lord.
It was necessary for Jesus to describe Himself here as the "good shepherd," as He was comparing Himself to others who believed themselves to be shepherds of the religious, yet they were only concerned for themselves. Our day is no different, as many "hierlings" vie for control over the religiously inclined among us--swamis, priests, the gurus, and many doomsday prophets. Each of these offering some kind of "salvation," deliverance, and/or the promise of happiness or wealth–now and eternally.

why
But there is one major difference between the many hierling shepherds and the good shepherd: "the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep" (v.11b). In other words, Jesus was willing to voluntarily lay down His life for the benefit of the sheep. This voluntary sacrifice is to be understood as a substitutionary sacrifice. Christ’s death as a substitute means that those for whom He died will not taste death–the second death.
