# i'd really like
one of those.
(, Fri 10 Oct 2003, 21:52, archived)
# Hmmm, could prob make one of those.
Replace the stylus on the arm with something like felt, have the laser burner on the underside, make the cd slightly recessed into the wooden base if darkness is an issue, and make sure noone touches it while you're burning.

Doable.

# you have just spent
FAR too long thinking about that!

# Nah, it'd be great.
lets go look on ebay for a cheap record player.

Hmmm, I wonder if you can buy recordable laser discs?

# If it was a grammaphone, you could hook a speaker up to it so that it would
play a sound when it finished burning.
Going to be a size issue, would have to build either from scratch, or, I believe I recall seeing one of those mini plastic tomy toy style portable record players which were much smaller, and could possibly be used in a pinch.

# hehe..
..I figured this would be smaller than that. The CD here would be life size. Some nice ickle cabinet work would be required.

# why not
make custom HUGE CDs?
(, Fri 10 Oct 2003, 22:15, archived)
# They DID!
...one place I worked used the old Philips laser discs!.. they are to a CD what an old '78' is to a vinyl single
(, Fri 10 Oct 2003, 22:18, archived)
# They're called laser discs
^_^

# Just notced the handle.
Right, ingrediants needed.

One usb portable cd writer.
One wind up music box
One cheapy record player (the smaller the better) to nab the stylus from
One Clockwork radio (This way, i'm thinking that instead of having a power cable, you could run it off clockwork ^_^ )
Miscellaneous stuff it will turn out you will need as you get there.

Won't be doing it any time soon, but come the summer hols, I think I might give this a go.

# keep me posted..
this I HAVE to see =)
(, Fri 10 Oct 2003, 22:18, archived)
# Well, if you come accross a cheap usb cd writer
anywhere, preferably similar to a portable cd player, ie not tray loading but top loading, let me know.
(, Fri 10 Oct 2003, 22:24, archived)
# hehehe
.. :)

# lol

# Actually, that's be a seriously cool project
To make a CD Burner into a wooden box.
(, Fri 10 Oct 2003, 21:55, archived)
# wooden box...wooden drive gear...
wooden work =)

# Miiindpisss
I don't have enough engineering skill to put the laser in the stylus arm and have it record that way, but the method above is achievable.
(, Fri 10 Oct 2003, 22:02, archived)
# give it a try!..
..just get eye-insurance before you plug it in ;)
(, Fri 10 Oct 2003, 22:04, archived)
# I was thinking
either to make the top of the cd flush with the top of the wooden turntable, or perhaps have a rubber sealant ring glued to the outside of the turntableand have the cd fit snuggly in that. Anyone know how much laser light would pass through to the other side of the cd?
(, Fri 10 Oct 2003, 22:07, archived)
# I once put a cd onto a lp player.
All in the name of science. It ruined the cd.
